The general overview, realities, and principles of Industrial Safety and Environmental Engineering Technology (ISEET) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas (FPOG), Bonny Island, are centered on human capital development. The primary aim is to ensure that workers return home in the same physical and mental condition as they left for work. This involves the proper utilization of values and materials, as well as the sustenance and development of natural resources, in line with global trends in the Safety and Environmental engineering profession. The focus areas include Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), Safety Engineering, Geodetic Monitoring and Observation, Environmental Engineering, Civil Engineering, Ecosystem Management, Ergonomics, Water and Wastewater Engineering, Pollution Studies, and Soil and Water Engineering.

The program emphasizes the application of practical and theoretical knowledge of engineering to solve Safety and Environmental engineering problems in society.

The department was established in 2014 and received its first interim accreditation in 2018. Full accreditation for the National Diploma (ND) was granted in 2023, and interim accreditation for the Higher National Diploma (HND) program was achieved in 2024. These accreditations have enabled the institution to fulfill its mandate of training middle and higher-level manpower for the oil and gas industries and related allied industries over the years.

This philosophy emphasizes that the world depends on Health, Safety, and Environment, and this can be actualized through FPOG contributing its quota by producing Industrial Safety and Environmental Engineering experts. These experts promote technological, industrial, and rural development in a disciplined learning environment.

The Programme is thus divided into two distinct segment, namely:-

  1. Industrial Safety Technology
  2. Environmental Engineering Technology

The goal of the Industrial Safety Technology:

  • Is to inculcate the knowledge of safety in the environment, industries and communities.
  • It imparts knowledge on how to avoid work and occupational related accidents and prevent property and environment damage.
  • It also emphasis how to observe areas for the presence of any potential hazard or unsafe conditions.
  • It ensure equipment monitoring and compliance with Safety regulations.

Environmental Engineering Technology basically is the frontline of environmental protection. One of the main focuses of environmental engineering technology is to balance the built environment with the natural environment. This involves coming up with solutions to tackle ecological problems such as waste reduction and pollution control. Potential areas were environmental engineering can be very important includes safety and environmental management, air quality management, water and wastewater quality management and public health management.

Goals

The goals of the programme are as follows:

  • Prepare students for successful careers in Industrial Safety Engineering, Environmental Engineering and related fields.
  • Provide employees with a well-educated and well skilled workforce that is ready and able to perform valuable industrial safety and environmental engineering service immediately after graduation.
  • Encourage the growth of knowledge-based industry and stimulate economic growth in Nigeria.

Objectives

The educational objectives of the Industrial Safety and Environmental Engineering Technology programme are to produce Engineering graduates who will:

  • Be successfully employed or employable in environmental engineering practice in areas such as solid waste, air pollution, water and wastewater treatment, water resources, or related fields and/or be continuing their studies at the graduate levels.
  • Contribute to the design, construction and operation of solutions to societal problems involving environmental systems.
  • Demonstrate commitment to professional and ethical norms prioritizing public health and safety, environmental protection and sustainability.
  • Show a commitment to ethical practice and professional development by extending their knowledge through the continuing and self-directed lifelong learning, professional licensure, and service to the profession and society.
  • Demonstrate in their professional practice strong technical abilities, leadership, communication and teamwork.
  • Develop HSE policy and implement it.
  • Conduct environmental auditing and set up environmental management system.
  • To develop the skills for accident investigation and reporting.
