Welcome to the Department of Computer Science. The Department contributes to the mission of the Polytechnic in training and developing diplomats with requisite skills needed in the Oil and Gas sector in Nigeria and West Africa sub-region in line with industry needs and community aspirations to solve complex technological problems of modern society.
The Department is adequately staffed with qualified and experienced staff to impart quality education on students. Also, there are well-equipped laboratories with the state-of-the-art facilities that place our diplomats at the same pedestal as their counterparts in other world-class institutions.
A Brief History Of The Department
The Department of Computer Science was granted interim accreditation following a Visitation / Resource Inspection of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in the fourth quarter of 2017. Mr. Iriakuma Christopher Tubuyai was appointed pioneer Head of Department by the Rector and the Department has since then admitted five (5) sets National Diploma (ND) Students for the 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 academic session respectively and has also, graduated four (4) sets of students of 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 as the case may be. Teaching and learning activities commenced in May, 2018. The leadership of the department was transferred to Ms. Ibeh, Eka Asibong on August 4, 2021.
Goal Of The Programme
The National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programme is designed to produce diplomats capable of applying computer in various areas of computing.
Objectives Of The Programme
Specifically, the HND programme in Computer Science is designed to equip students with adequate knowledge of the discipline. The objectives of the programme are as follows:
- To develop graduate with skills and knowledge needed to meet the requirements of a rapidly advancing and challenging field of ICT.
- To produce middle-level graduates with IT skills and prepare them for the industry and global competitiveness.
- To produce highly creative and innovative manpower that are competent enough to be self-employed in the field of Information Technology and its allied disciplines, or in the least be immediately employable.
- To develop human capital with emphasis on creating a knowledge-based society.
- To develop manpower to pursue careers in a wide range of professions including software development, web design, Networking administration and hardware development that would foster the attainment of Institution’s vision.
- To provide students with balanced foundation in computer science knowledge and practical skills.
